Some news from Joe Anderson, President of the Kaimai Canoe Club

Wairoa River Access

Bottom Takeout: I have spoken to George McMurray, owner of the bottom takeout for the Wairoa. He seems like a very amenable chap. He's a hunter fisherman from way back so sympathetic to outdoor sports people. He has had problems with hoons doing workouts in the paddock. He doesn’t think they are river users, but would appreciate it if we could – if you’re feeling brave after risking life and limb in the river – make the effort to let these people know they’re not welcome. Tying the offenders up with your throw bag, beating them with your paddle and dragging them out the gate with your trusty datsun should do the trick, but more a diplomatic approach would be sufficient. He is happy for river users to continue using the paddock though he does get the job of picking up the rubbish after each flow day and keeping the drive and grass in drivable condition, so the money he collects is fair recognition of that. Please remember your gold coin donation, thanks, and take any rubbish away with you.

The danger tape, for whoever gets there first on a flow day can be disconnected from the honesty box end, and rolled up enough to leave enough room for only one vehicle at a time to come or go so that the wear and tear on the grass is restricted to the current vehicle track.

Midway Access: Jean has contacted the new owners at the midway access and they’re happy for the status quo to continue for the same exhorbitant $5. Please avoid leaving vehicles in the drive if at all possible. A neighbour who shares the drive but not the $5 gets understandably pissed off when his drive is blocked.

Listen for the recording for the Ohinemuri River at Karangahake. You are interested in the first 3 numbers (ignore the metrics used):
< 126 stay home
126 - 130 good intermediate flow
130 - 134 starts getting pushy
135 - 140 good solid flow for advanced paddlers
140 - 145 expert level - or volunteer for shuttle duties
145+ serious stuff - river will be over the road! Cops unhappy.

Note: The difference between the low flow and the higher flow is 2 metres at the recording point on the river which correlates to a lot more than that in the main rapids!

I found the following website which gives a graph of the level of K-gorge.
http://www.ew.govt.nz/enviroinfo/riverlevelsandrainfall/riverlevelsmap/619_16_100.htm

Waitawheta
Although this river flows into the K-Gorge its flow is from a different catchment. Which means if the K-Gorge is flowing the Waitawheta may or may not be flowing. The vice versa also applies where the Waitawheta can be flowing but the K-Gorge can be low. The catchment is similar to the Ngamuwahine (tributary of the Wairoa).
There is no flow phone but the visual gauge is where the river flows into the K-Gorge. If you can see the rocks (or the river isn't brown) then it's likely to be too low.

Mokau
Flow phone: 07-877 8525
Important: This number is for the power station and is answered by some kind people. Don't overuse it!!
At the put in at the Waitere dam there is a marker post measured in metres:
< 1.5 m stay home
1.5 - 2.0 good river trip for intermediate paddlers
2.0 - 2.5 getting pushy but lots of surfing and playing
2.5 - 3.0 getting big
3.0 + expert level (eddy fences and whirlpools, dead animals and trees will be with you)
