Race Rules, Information and Conditions of Entry
Of The
TEVA 2007 Wairoa Whitewater Extreme Race

Please read this carefully!

Everyone can participate but must be skilled enough to paddle the gorge section of the Wairoa River by themselves (Grade 4-5). Know your limits!!! Every competitor MUST wear buoyancy aid and helmet and carry a throw bag.
Boat restrictions: Only standard production, plastic whitewater kayaks with a maximum boat length of 2.60 metres. We prefer the use of creek boats rather than rodeo kayaks.

Race rules and time schedule:

Due to the time restrictions (dam release only from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day) and event logistics the number of competitors is limited on the second race day (Head-to-Heads).
On day 1 there is no limitation of competitors in the time trial.
On day 2 (Head-to-Head races) the fastest paddlers from day one can enter only:
Top 64 Men
Top 16 Women
This means, if more than 64 Men and more than 16 Women enter the competition, only the top 64/16 paddlers can compete in the Head-to-Head races. If the minimum of 16 competing women is not reached there may be NO seperate women's class. If you are keen to compete we recommend you pre-register NOW to secure your entry!!! Go to the Online Registration Form by clicking on the link at the bottom of this page. Entry fee of $ 50.00 can be sent by CHQ to PO Box 1160, Rotorua, during January. Make CHQs out to Topline Agencies NZ or email us for other payment options. If you are under 18 years old we would like to see written permission of your parents/guardian that you are allowed to compete.

The competition begins on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. Meet at the river's take-out (paddock next to Ruahihi power station for registration. Registration closes just before 10:00 a.m. The race starts approx. 10:30 a.m. with a 5-metre seal launch at the put-in below McLarens Falls and paddlers race down to just above the Waterfall Rapid. The results of this Time Trial determine the combinations for the Head-to-Head sprint the next day. No concessions are made for popped spraydecks, broken paddles, etc. Practice your seal launch! After the time trial there will be plenty of time for paddlers to do some more runs down the river if they wish. Starts for the Time Trial are in 30 seconds intervals.

Saturday Night Bliss-Stick Party: This year, Bliss-Stick came to the party: Thanks very much to Richard for making the Bliss-Stick Party possible; Red Bull will be with us too, although not with the hummer.  It will be in McLaren Falls Park like last year and will kick off around 8 p.m. Lion Breweries are supporting the party with a large number of free beer, party on!!! We have a curfew again of 12:30 a.m., mainly because if we partied any longer there wouldn't be any competitors on Sunday. This will be an outdoor party that might be cancelled due to bad weather. Competitors can camp in the park and your entry includes the camping fee.

On Sunday all competitors meet at 10 a.m. at the put-in at McLarens Falls and paddle together down to just above The Waterfall. The Head-to-Head sprints start there and competiton begins approx. 11:00 a.m. Paddlers are put in pairs according to their placings in the time trial and go into a head-to-head elimination sprint down The Waterfall and Rollercoaster Rapids. The winner of each sprint carries on into the next round, another sprint down the rapids, and so on. The field gets reduced to 2 paddlers who then go together for 1st and 2nd. Some heats might have three paddlers competing at the same time, or if the number of competitors requires it the highest ranked looser might get another run.
During the Head-to-Heads, pushing with hands and paddles is not allowed, boat-to-boat contact is OK (basically, Canoe Polo rules apply).

Note that the "Left Line" down into the Rollecoaster is off limits!! In 2007 we will also disallow the so-called "Right Line". However, the "Chicken Chute" is open to be paddled in the first three rounds (see picture above).

Head-to-Head Men's Quarter Finals, Semi Finals, Finals (last 8 Men): No more "Chicken Chutes". Must go through Cauldron and then turn left for Left or Centre Line on Final Drop.
Head-to-Head Women's Semi Finals, Finals (last 4 Women): No more "Chicken CHutes". Must go through Cauldron and then turn left for Left or Centre Line on Final Drop.

The entry fee has been set at $ 50.00 and includes a T-Shirt, camping fee on Saturday and land access fee to take-out.
